Edinburahh

I totally didn't realize I never wrote about Scotland! Our hostel had pretty shotty internet, so I didn't get the change to blog while there.

WELL. Edinburgh is amazing and I could totally see myself living there someday. Crazy, right? But all of Scotland just blew me away with how awesome it was! After a 9 hour travel day on three trains and stops in Brussels and London, I got the Edinburgh pretty late. I stayed at Castle Rock Hostel which, as you can infer, is at the base of a castle! Now only were the views stunning, the hostel is so cool. This one was way more hopping than the other two. All the rooms were themed (I was in Beetles, Dung bed XD) and the walls had huge paintings and murals.

The main thing I did there was go on a Highlands Tour with Bess. It was on a little van and went through half a dozen Scottish cities and the Highlands. Our tour guide, Steve, was hilarious. I could listen to his voice for forever haha. He was such a history buff, I feel like I know so much out Scotland now! Sir William Wallace, you were the bomb.

I think the high light of the whole tour was the Loch Ness boat tour. There were SONAR screens so we could see the depth of the lake (more than 5 Statue of LIberties deep!) and see every single fish below the surface, and captain of the ship was explaining everything when this drunk English woman asked is he believed the Loch Ness monster is real. He response was "are real." Thus began the most fascinating boat ride conversation of my life. He was telling us how it's actually a legitimate species of animal, evolved from dinosaurs, but warm blooded (or else how could it live in such deep water and survive?). He showed us pictures on his iPhone of when he saw one in 2001 while kayaking in Loch Ness (I. SAW. THE LOCH NESS MONSTER. my luck is crayzay), and from when they found a carcas on the bottom of the lake. They couldn't bring it above the surface because the oxygen would destroy it, much like sunken ships rusting. He said he sent all these photos to MIT and they've certified it. People have tried to buy the photos off him for tons of money, but he'll never sell because if more people knew about these creatures, they'd try to hunt them and kill them and he cares too much about them and Loch Ness to let that happen. I also got to see a picture captured of three of the animals on the SONAR, two adults and a baby. Apparently, they live in 8 or 9 countries over the world, from Canada to Guam. So yeah, learn something new every day, huh?

After the tour, Bess showed me the Elephant Room/Bar/Palace/Grotto House, where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter on some napkins. We went to dinner at Maxies, a place my roommate Maurissa recommended from when she studied abroad a few semesters ago and it was delish. I like cucumbers now.

I'm also learning how to pronounce all these cities and street correctly a.k.a. learning how to NOT sound like a stupid American. It's Edinbohrahh, not Edinburrow. It's Glosstah, not Glouchester. It's LeviOHsah, not LevioSAH. etc etc.

Lahndahn

London is pretty kick ass. I'm here for three whole days, which is nice. Last night was the first time I slept more than 4 hours in one night since they day I arrived. Glorious, I tell you. Bess, who's already been studying in London for a couple of months, was my tour guide last night. We went to the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221B Bakers street, which was a hoot. They've recreated their entire flat, and you can sit in Sherlock and John's chairs and wear the hats and the pipe and the whole shebang. We took a lot of pictures XD Then we walked to the actual flat where they film BBC Sherlock and basically flailed around for a while exclaiming about how brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch is. It was everything I ever imagined and more ;]

I met up with some UW kids from my German program and we say Les Mis at the Queen's Theatre and it blew me away. It's not my typical kind of musical (I prefer modern/1990 to today shows) but the entire production was fantastic. I can't believe I actually just saw Les Mis, in London. Whaaat? The area of the theatre, Picadilly Circus, is a bit like London's Time Square. It's a theatre district, has lots of lights, a Chinatown, all that jazz. The weather's been great (shorts. yuss.) so it was bustling, which I loved.

Bess went to Switzerland early this morning, so I was on my own again for today and tomorrow. I took the tube to Buckingham palace and walked around what felt like half of London! I went to Buckinham, saw tons of war memorials and commemorative statues (for New Zealand, Australia, the West Indies, from WWI & WWII, etc. all beautiful and a bit haunting), Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, Parliament, the London Eye, Hyde Park, and more I'm sure. I'm just rubbish with names sometimes. Tomorrow I'm going to try to hit up some museums, then SCROOBIUS PIP CONCERT AHHHH. I'm so pumped!

My hostel's great, again. It's in Earl's Court, which must be a pretty affluent area, because literally everyone drives either a Jaguar, Mercedes, or BMW and the apartments look like mansions. Rock on. I've met cool people at each place so far too. I helped a guy from Kenya last night find the place, there were tons of cool British people in my room at Edinburgh, and awesome guys from Portugal and Australia in Köln. Can't wait to meet all the international/German people in my dorm, where our only common language will be Deutsch!

Ich bin hier!

International travel is easy pease! Jk. But I made it! Met up with two other kids from UW's program and we flew from Chicago to London, short layover, London to Düsseldorf, then trained to Köln. Our hostel is amazing! I think it's part converted church or something, but it's modern and nice and clean, and that's what counts. We arrived around 2 pm Germany time, met up with basically the entire UW-Madison group, and explored Köln some. Even though I've seen the cathedral twice before, it's still stunningly breath taking. If I have time, I'll try to upload my camera onto my computer later today/tomorrow so y'all can see! It's legal to walk around with an open container, so we all went to a grocery store and bought tiny bottles of wine. Sorry (not sorry) mom and dad haha.

All in all, I stayed up pretty late. With the time zone difference and hours of plane riding, even though I went to bed at 9 pm, I had been up for 30 hours straight. wooooo!

Today I went to the Ludwig Museum. It's only 20th century art and later. The most amazing pop art, surrealism, and modern art I've ever seen! (I've never been to MOMA). I spent 2 and a half hours there, watching crazy experimental films with Paul Giammotti whistling and drooling over how awesome Roy Lichtenstein's art is. It was great just walking around the city by myself. I love exploring and have no problem not having a group or anything. I'm sure I'm going to say this about everywhere, but Köln is a beautiful city. I walked across the bridge over the Rhein and there's tens of thousands locks attached to the metal walkway, each with a couples' name on them! I guess tradition is to throw the key into the river. Cute.

Becca and I quick trained to Bonn to drop off our blister causing over 9000 pound suit case beasts, so I'm suuuper glad I don't have to lug that thing around anymore! For the next 9 days, I only have to deal with my littler suitcase.

Tomorrow I'm taking a train to Edinburgh (which the English girl in my hostel told me I've been pronouncing dreadfully wrong for forever) so I get to see Bess! Very excited :]

Tschüss!

Shau Nao

They don't prepare you for all of this. Saying goodbye is always hard, especially with such amazingly great roommates and friends like mine. To everyone at The Bromansion, in Titanic Players, my WUD Filmies, house girlfriend and boyfriends, my family, Toledo kids, and cool cats I've met in Madison and around, you are all beautiful and hilarious and I'll miss you bunches these next six months.

While thankful for the month of 40 hour a week working, I'm ready to get out of the limbo that is being in Madison without class or good weather and ready to fly off to Europe for a grand adventure. My iPod is charged, my room is clean, and I've got an itinerary the size of tome. This shit is going to rock.

Bonn Voyage!

HAHHAAAAAHAHA

hahaaaaahahaha

haaaah

um. bye guys.

Departing

DUDES- I'm going to Europe on Monday. I'll be traveling around and studying in Bonn, Germany from February 20th until July 31st and I'm insanely excited. I've been to Germany twice before, but never longer than a month, and I've been positively itching to go back ever since my first trip sophomore year of high school.

After working on it for 5 hours today, I'm mostly packed. I deep cleaned my room because I'll only have 2 weeks in Madison once I get back before move out day. But this just means my room is sparkling clean and ready for my going away shin dig tonight!

Most of my friends who have studied abroad kept a blog, so I figured it'd be fun to have my own. I'll try to update it often enough, especially once I get a digital camera this weekend, what whaaat.

Oh, since I think in soundtracks, I've made my first playlist of the semester. Feel free to get the songs here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/9o3vry
